Line 2-Green currently connects the West Zone to the East Zone, starting at Vila Madalena and ending at Vila Prudente. After years of promises, the São Paulo government will finally meet Guarulhos’ long-standing demand and expand the line to serve the population.
Guarulhos is the second most populous municipality in São Paulo. Local residents have been complaining for years about the hardships of long commutes on heavily congested stretches such as Via Dutra and Ayrton Senna.
With an estimated investment of 5.4 billion reais, the project is expected to be completed between 2031 and 2033.
The phases of the Line 2-Green expansion

The first phase aims to connect Vila Prudente to Penha with eight new stations: Orfanato, Santa Clara, Anália Franco, Vila Formosa, Santa Isabel, Guilherme Giorgi, Aricanduva, and Penha, which together span approximately 8.4 kilometers. Construction on this section is already 50% complete, with some tunnels already excavated.
In the second phase, we will have five new stations: Penha de França, Gabriela Mistral, Fernão Dias, Ponte Grande, and Dutra. The Metro has already begun excavating shafts between the Penha and Dutra areas. In March of this year, CETESB granted the environmental license necessary for the project to move forward.
Once completed, Line 2 will become the longest in São Paulo. It will be approximately 23 kilometers long just in the expanded section connecting Vila Prudente to Penha. It will be even longer with the extension to Guarulhos.
Problems the expansion aims to solve

In addition to reducing travel time from Guarulhos to the capital, the expansion will also decrease reliance on cars and buses on busy roads. Furthermore, it is expected that overcrowded lines will be relieved by the redistribution of passengers who currently use Line 3-Red and CPTM lines.
With improved regional integration, Line 2 will connect Vila Prudente, Penha, and Guarulhos. It will integrate with Line 3 (Red) and others, creating a corridor linking the eastern zone, the city of São Paulo, and Guarulhos.
Once completed, the expansion is expected to benefit more than 700,000 passengers per day.
