Opened between 2021 and 2022, Bruno Covas Park promises to be a new outdoor recreation area. The linear park is 17 kilometers long and covers 1 million square meters. It runs alongside the Pinheiros River, in the region between the João Dias Bridge and the Marginal Tietê.
The name is in honor of former mayor Bruno Covas, who died in 2021 from cancer. According to close friends, Bruno loved nature and playing sports, making it fitting to name the park after him.
The “new” Rio Pinheiros
In 2019, the São Paulo government launched the “New Rio Pinheiros” program, which aimed to clean up the river. The work began by reducing the volume of sewage discharged into the tributary to improve water quality and make the river’s surroundings more pleasant for the population. The goal was to achieve good results by 2022.
The proposal also included the revitalization of green areas along the riverbanks. In addition to the trees that had withstood years of pollution, the intention was to plant new species and take care of the maintenance of the local flora.
In 2026, the project continues with the same goal, even with improvements over time. The river no longer has the same bad smell, and today we can see fish, capybaras, and birds enjoying the local nature. In 2025 alone, about 44,000 tons of trash were removed.
What to do at Bruno Covas Park
Seeking to offer an appropriate and safe place for sports, the park has skateboarding, walking, and cycling tracks. In addition to rest areas, there are playgrounds for children and a pet area for those who want to walk their dogs.
There were also investments in green areas and the maintenance of existing trees on the site, as well as restrooms and a first aid area. The park connects to bike paths and public transportation stations such as CPTM, Metro, and buses.
The highlights are the floatingobservation deck over the Pinheiros River, which offers a beautiful view of the city, and the floating walkway, which connects one bank of the river to the other, giving pedestrians the sensation of walking on water.
