The Ipiranga neighborhood is in the South Zone of São Paulo and is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city. Its historical importance is tremendous, after all, it’s where the Ipiranga stream is located, the place where proclaimed the brazil’s independence in 1822. In addition, the region is home to important historical sites, such as the Ipiranga Museum.

Independence Park
The most important point in the neighborhood’s history is undoubtedly Independence Park. With an area of 161,300 square meters, it houses the Museu do Ipiranga, the Monumento à Independência and the Casa do Grito. The site is part of the national heritage, after all, it was there that D. Pedro I proclaimed the country’s independence from Portugal.

Jafet family mansions
Because of the neighborhood’s importance, Ipiranga was the home to families from São Paulo’s elite. The Jafet family, one of the best known and oldest in São Paulo, owned many properties in the area, since almost the entire family lived there. In Rua Bom Pastor, where most of the Jafets lived, you can still admire some of the palaces that remain, such as Palacete Violeta.

Vicente de Azevedo Museum
The museum has an eclectic collection from the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century in São Paulo. Perfect for a historical and cultural tour.

USP Zoology Museum
The Zoology Museum began in the 1890s when various collections formed the Museu Paulista. Today , the site is home to one of the largest zoological collections in Latin America.

Sesc Ipiranga
If there’s one venue that doesn’t even ask for more performances, it’s Sesc. These spaces are a favorite among São Paulo residents, whether it’s for their cultural, sports and leisure offerings, or just to get to know the cultural and sports centers scattered around the city.

Mercadão do Ipiranga
Next, if you’re passing through the Ipiranga neighborhood, don’t miss the Mercadão. It’s the perfect spot to get fresh produce, cheeses and other artisanal delicacies.

Hamburger from Seu Oswaldo
Finally, we have a hamburger joint so traditional that it has become almost a tourist attraction in the neighborhood. In business since 1966, the place offers the old recipes to the letter, with a “secret” tomato sauce for a special touch.
