Although cemeteries are often associated solely with mourning and silence, they are, in fact, excellent places to embark on a journey through memory—both of those who rest there and of the metropolis itself. The ConsolaçãoCemetery is the oldest in São Paulo and houses an extensive collection of funerary art, as well as the legacies of prominent figures.
Located in the heart of the capital, the Consolação Cemetery even holds the well-deserved status of an open-air museum, thanks to the richness of the works it houses and the historical significance of its occupants.
In addition to leading the cultural itinerary as the city’s first necropolis, it also houses the tombs of icons such as Tarsila do Amaral and Monteiro Lobato. Another attraction are the sculptures created by masters such as Victor Brecheret.
Historical heritage and guided tours at the Consolação Cemetery
A visit to the cemetery’s collection is an enriching experience, especially when taken as a guided tour. There are currently specialized tours available on-site that are completely free of charge.
Along the way, visitors can admire monumental pieces such as the Matarazzo family mausoleum, the largest in Latin America. It has a structure equivalent to a three-story building. You can also admire works by renowned artists such as Nicola Rolo and Luigi Brizzolara. Along the way, visitors can also see the final resting places of figures such as Ramos de Azevedo and the writers Mário and Oswald de Andrade.

Visits for the general public take place regularly on Tuesdays and Fridays, promptly at 2 p.m. Wednesdays, however, are reserved for school groups. The initiative aims to promote heritage education among children.
Therefore, for those who wish to participate, the visit requires a prior reservation made via email to the city hall’s press office at least 24 hours in advance.
The Araçá Cemetery
Less than 2 kilometers away is the Araçá Cemetery. Opened in 1887 to help alleviate overcrowding at the older neighboring cemetery, it has established itself as the city’s second-oldest necropolis . On this itinerary, it can also serve as a complement to the historical tour of Consolação.
It is famous for its dense tree cover and vast collection of bronze and marble sculptures. The highlights are the angels and cherubs that adorn the mausoleums of illustrious figures such as Assis Chateaubriand, Nair Bello, and Cacilda Becker.
Furthermore, one of the major highlights of Araçá is the imposing mausoleum of the São Paulo State Military Police. Dedicated to the police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, the monument features a large strategic observation deck. It offers a panoramic view of nearly the entire cemetery and the surrounding urban skyline.
In this way, these cemeteries uniquely combine respect for the memory of those who have passed away with an appreciation of São Paulo ’s aesthetics and architecture .
