Built between 1937 and 1939, the Matarazzo Building was designed by the renowned architectural firm Ramos de Azevedo, Severo & Vilares. Its initial purpose was to serve as the administrative center for Indústrias Reunidas Fábricas Matarazzo. It was intended to be a symbol of the industrial heyday of the time. However, plans changed over the decades, and the building was taken over by the Audi group and Banco Banespa, earning it its old and affectionate nickname: “Banespinha.”
In 2004, the Matarazzo Building became the official headquarters of the São Paulo City Hall. It is worth noting that the building has been a listed heritage site since 1992, with all its features preserved to this day. This allows the population to rediscover its importance through guided tours of this São Paulo icon.

Secrets of the 13th floor and the green refuge on the terrace
One curiosity that catches the attention of visitors is the lack of a 13th floor, which is a superstition from the 1930s. In addition, there is a surprise at the top of Matarazzo: a hanging garden. Implemented in the 1960s, it has more than 400 botanical species and a lake full of carp. It is an interesting contrast to the concrete of the region.
There, you can observe the city from the observation deck, with a view of the Historic Center from another perspective. In addition, you will have a panoramic view of other well-known tourist attractions, such as Shopping Light and the Municipal Theater. This is undoubtedly the highlight of the tour.
