A historic milestone is about to take place in São Paulo’s urban mobility: the construction of the deepest subway station in Latin America. The Itaberaba – Hospital Vila Penteado Station isthe result of a joint effort between the Government of the State of São Paulo and the Linha Uni Concessionaire.
The Pinheiros Station reaches 40 meters and the Santa Cruz Station reaches 41.5 meters, making it the current record holder. With an impressive depth of 65 meters, the Itaberaba Station will surpass previously known milestones.
Why will the Itaberaba – Hospital Vila Penteado Station be so deep?
The great depth is no accident. First, the project had to ensure that the tunnels were safe for passage beneath the Tietê River. In addition, they needed to avoid conflicts with other underground structures in the metro network.
Consequently, the distance from the surface was necessary to make it technically feasible for the line to pass through critical areas of São Paulo’s geography.
The vertical drop establishes the facility as the one with the greatest downward extension on the entire continent. Once it reaches the planned level, the structure will resemble an inverted 20-storybuilding .
As a result, the structural and logistical complexity puts São Paulo back at the top of the rail infrastructure rankings, raising the technical bar for public works.
Technical details and timelines for Line 6-Orange

The future station will be part of the long-awaited Line 6-Orange, which is already about 48% complete. Scheduledto open in 2026, the branch line will be 25.3 kilometers long.
The route will pass through 15 stations, connecting the Brasilândia neighborhood in the northern zone to São Joaquim Station in the city center.
The new connection promises to facilitate passenger flow between the city’s extremes. Residents of the North Zone will gain a faster alternative for accessing downtown. Meanwhile, the rest of the population will have easier access to residential and cultural areas in the region.
