The Cabeceiras do Aricanduva Natural Park was inaugurated in March, in the eastern zone of São Paulo. The project aims to preserve the headwaters of the streams that flow into the Aricanduva. This region has suffered for years from irregularly disposed waste, environmental degradation , and pressure from occupations.
The city government acquired the land in 2023 and invested R$ 9.4 million in the implementation of the park, in addition to the R$ 49 million spent on expropriations.
The 2,214,301.80 square meter area is part of the city’s policy to expand green areas. It is home to one of the headwaters of the Aricanduva River, making it an environmentally strategic area.
The spring protection project seeks to reduce the accumulation of sediments such as soil or sand, sewage, and garbage thrown into the river. The goal is to regulate water flow to minimize problems with large volumes of rain, such as flooding, which is common in lower areas of the site.
In addition, it also aims to conserve sections of the Atlantic Forest. This also helps to reduce flood damage , as it acts as a kind of “natural sponge, “ naturally containing large flows of water.
Nature and sustainability

The region has a very rich biodiversity. It is home to 44 species of birds, such as the rich parakeet and the green-billed toucan, as well as other species such as marmosets, spiders, and snakes. In terms of plants, 319 species have been identified, including seven species ofendangered pteridophytes , gymnosperms, and angiosperms.
The park has photovoltaic panels installed in the administration building to save energy. In addition to a rainwater reserve system and cross-ventilation environments with natural lighting.
Researchers have the comfort of on-site dormitories to encourage efficient research on fauna, flora, and hydrology. In addition to maintaining the ecology of the environment.
What to do at the Cabeceiras do Aricanduva Natural Park

As it is a conservation unit, the use of the park is slightly different from ordinary parks. It has structures designed to welcome schools and universities to promote environmental education, and spots for observing the region’s birds. In addition, it has a small square, exercise equipment, and playgrounds.
The park also has a lookout point and an observation tower for those who want a better view of the city and the local landscape. There is also the possibility of hiking and short walks, with elevated walkways so that the population can move among the vegetation.
