Bunka Matsuri 2026 transforms the Bunkyo headquarters, in the Liberdade neighborhood, into a gathering place for lovers of Japanese culture! Now in its 20th edition, the Japanese Culture Festival will offer free admission, with attractions for all ages.
The program combines traditional events, such as the tea ceremony and ikebana, with contemporary attractions from pop culture, anime, and cosplay. That’s why it’s a must-see for anyone who loves Japanese festivals in São Paulo, taking place in one of the most iconic neighborhoods of the Japanese-Brazilian community.
Bunka Matsuri: The Japanese Culture Festival in São Paulo
“Bunka Matsuri” combines two Japanese terms: bunka, which means culture, and matsuri, festival. In practice, the name captures the essence of the event: celebrating Japanese culture with the Japanese-Brazilian community and enthusiasts.
Over the course of two days, traditional arts such as calligraphy and crafts take center stage alongside music, dance, cuisine, and geek culture. In this way, the festival presents Japan not as a monocultural country, but as a diverse nation, rich in traditions, innovations, and contemporary influences.
Bunka Matsuri 2026 takes place across various venues at Bunkyo, the Brazilian Society for Japanese Culture and Social Assistance. This allows visitors to create their own itinerary, exploring stages, exhibitions, workshops, an artists’ fair, and a food court.

The Bunka Matsuri 2026 program includes traditional activities, live entertainment, and interactive experiences. For example:
- Shows and performances in the Grand Auditorium: the stage features Japanese dance and music, with taiko, sumo, and yosakoi groups, as well as the Miss Nikkey and Cosplay contests;
- Geek Arena: an area featuring Pokémon card game tournaments, karaoke, and an arcade with retro games;
- Craft workshops: workshops on Japanese cuisine, ceramics, ikebana, kumihimo, kanzashi, and mizuhiki;
- Food and shopping: a themed food court, shops with products imported from Japan, and Artist’s Alley featuring independent artists and creative products.
In addition, during the festival, visitors are eligible for half-price admission to the Museum of Japanese Immigration History, located in the Bunkyo building. This way, you can extend your visit and learn more about the history of the Japanese community in Brazil!
