Have you ever imagined taking a night hike in one of the world’s largest urban native forests? Cantareira State Park offers a guided night hike along the Pedra Grande trail. Find out how to embark on this lantern-lit adventure!
The activity is an immersive experience designed to bring people closer to nature, foster environmental awareness, and offer the opportunity to admire the urban and natural landscapes of São Paulo.
The adventure is led by local environmental educators from Urbia and offers visitors a more relaxed form of nature tourism focused on environmental education.
The hiking route

The itinerary begins at the meeting point at the Horto Florestal Visitor Center, from where the group walks the trail to the Pedra Grande Lookout. The route is approximately 7 kilometers long (round trip).
The trail usually takes 2 hours and 30 minutes to 3 hours during the day. However, night hikes tend to take longer due to occasional stops and the activities planned for the participating groups.
The Night Hike Experience in the Serra da Cantareira

With the departure usually scheduled for 7:00 p.m., the group sets off from the meeting point along the predefined route to Pedra Grande. Along the trail, participants begin to experience the Atlantic Forest firsthand and have a special chance to see and hear the region’s wildlife.
Participants usually get to hear howler monkeys, amphibians, and nocturnal birds. They may also spot small mammals, such as monkeys and coatis, crossing the trail—always from a safe distance, of course.
With the educators on hand, visitors learn more about the local wildlife through explanations about biodiversity and conservation.
Upon reaching the final stop, at the top of the Pedra Grande Lookout, the group takes in what is often the most memorable moment of the tour: the view of the metropolis that never sleeps, fully illuminated.
While taking in the panoramic view, there’s also a moment of rest and silence to encourage reflection. After all, in addition to discovering the secrets of the forest at night, participants get to step away from their urban routine for a few hours.
Get ready to join in!
Generally, night tours take place on the last Saturday of the month and are usually announced by the park and Urbia. So, it’s worth keeping an eye out so you don’t miss the opportunity—and be sure to pack your sneakers and flashlight!
In August, the hike is scheduled for the 29th, from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with participants expected to arrive by 4:15 p.m. Tickets are sold directly on the official website and cost between R$ 75 ( half-price) and R$ 150 (full price).
