The Santa Genebra Forest is an environmental conservation area and an Area of Significant Ecological Interest (ARIE). Covering approximately 252 hectares of pristine Atlantic Forest, the site serves not only as a research facility but also promotes environmental education through daytime and nighttime tours.

These special tours take place on specific nights, usually during a full moon.
The main concept is to immerse visitors completely in the night, exploring the forest and observing sounds, smells, and natural phenomena such as the moonlight in the sky. In addition, it allows visitors to observe the local wildlife, including insects, amphibians, and bats.
Trained guides accompany the tours and, during the hike, highlight the area’s biodiversity, facilitate discussions, and provide information on topics such as the importance of Atlantic Forest conservation, native species, and the behavior of nocturnal wildlife.
The tour itinerary
In general, guided tours in the Santa Genebra Forest typically follow pre-established trail routes . However, the staff may adapt them depending on weather conditions or the purpose of the proposed activity.
For the nighttime experience, the organization selects the safest and most accessible trails, avoiding areas with steep terrain.
Typically, the route follows a roughly 1.2-km-long marked trail through the forest and an approximately 3.8-km-long path around the perimeter of the site. This second path allows visitors to observe and discuss the impacts of urbanization on the surrounding natural environment.
During the tour, visitors must follow certain safety guidelines. Visitors must remain with the group at all times, avoid the indiscriminate use of flashlights, refrain from picking plants, do not feed the animals, and avoid making excessive noise.

At Santa Genebra, all guided tours require advance booking on the Foundation’s official website. However, to participate in this type of night hike in São Paulo, you’ll need to keep an eye on the Foundation’s official social media channels, as the team announces dates and other details sporadically.
Admission to the Mata de Santa Genebra ARIE is free, but the service of an authorized visitor guide is paid separately, with rates set by the guide.
