Pouso de Paranapiacaba is the perfect opportunity to visit a historic mansion from 1922 and enjoy a good cup of coffee. Located on the Caminho do Mar Highway, Café 1922 is part of the historical tour of Caminhos do Mar Park and is open to visitors.
It was a project by architect Victor Dubugras, one of the leading figures in São Paulo architecture in the 20th century. The mansion was part of a complex of monuments erected to celebrate the centennial of Brazil’s independence. It was inaugurated in 1922 by then-GovernorWashington Luís.
It was also part of the revitalization plan for the old Estrada Velha de Santos, where a road for automobiles was being built. The idea was to transform the already functional route into a tourist attraction and landmark. In addition to serving as a rest stop for drivers crossing the road, it featured a water spout to fill car radiators.
The Old Santos Road was part of the route traveled by Dom Pedro I in 1822. Days before the famous “Cry of Ipiranga, ” making the site an important part of the country’s history.
What is Café 1922 and how can you visit?
After being listed and recognized as a historic landmark, the mansion underwent renovations, including reinforcements to the wood and masonry, and part of the roof was replaced. Today it houses Café 1922. Opened in 2023, the themed café was designed to revitalize the region’s tourism appeal.
The menu features Portuguese cuisine, such as the famous pastéis de nata, in addition to traditional snacks and coffee. With décor reminiscent of the 1920s, the café features hand-painted tiles. It is open on holidays and from Wednesday to Sunday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., in accordance with the visiting hours of Caminhos do Mar Park.
What to do in the region?

Inside Caminhos do Mar Park, you can hike along the Estrada Velha and enjoy picnics at designated spots. You can also visit historical monuments such as the Rancho da Maioridade and other landmarks built for the centennial of independence.
You can also visit the village of Paranapiacaba, explore the historic English-style houses, and visit the Nascentes de Paranapiacaba Municipal Natural Park. There are options for guided hikes through the Atlantic Forest.
