The Chapel of Our Lady of Good Voyage is one of São Bernardo do Campo‘s main historical sites and is considered the oldest in the ABC Paulista. With more than two centuries of tradition, the place not only preserves the architecture of the time, but also witnessed the Dom Pedro I’s journey to São Paulo before the Grito do Ipiranga.
Built at the beginning of the 19th century, the chapel remains to this day a place of historical, cultural and pilgrimage importance in the metropolitan region. Did you know it?

The Chapel of Our Lady of Good Voyage witnessed the journey of the future emperor
Inaugurated in 1814, the chapel was the first parish church in the region and is a historical landmark of São Bernardo do Campo. Despite its importance, in its early years the chapel was in a precarious state: former residents report that it was once in ruins, having only a gate and three walls, with no roof to cover it.
The chapel’s fame, however, was consolidated during the Independence process. Records from the time confirm that Dom Pedro I passed by during his journey along the Estrada de Santos, on his way to Ipiranga. In addition, according to popular tradition, the prince regent visited the chapel to say a prayer before continuing his journey.

A regular stop for travelers
Dom Pedro I was not the only one to pass by the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem. In the 19th century, drovers and travelers on the old Santos road used to stop there to ask for blessings before continuing on their way.
Visiting the chapel is free: just go to Rua Marechal Deodoro, 1131, in the center of São Bernardo. Take the opportunity to also visit the Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem Mother Church, located a few meters away, which impresses with its grandeur and sacred paintings.
