São Paulo residents already know that downtown São Paulo is one of the city’s most iconic areas. But now, República has earned official international recognition as one of the most interesting and culturally rich places on the planet.
The neighborhood is the only representative from São Paulo to make the list of“The 40 Coolest Neighborhoods in the World in 2026, ” compiled by the British publication Time Out. With this, República has replaced Barra Funda, which represented the state capital in the previous edition.
Cultural Reinvention of the República Neighborhood
The international magazine selects destinations based on criteria such as cuisine, drinks, nightlife, and a sense of community. Ranked 25th on this year’s list, República stood out for blending “legendaryskyscrapers and century-old buildings that are being given new life” by hosting art galleries, cafés, and bookstores.
In other words, the neighborhood’s great charm lies not in modernization alone, but in its cultural reinvention. This movement goes hand in hand with historical preservation and transforms the neighborhood’s heritage into a living space for new generations.

Cuisine and nightlife among São Paulo’s best neighborhoods
According to the publication, a visit to República should begin at one of São Paulo’s most iconic buildings: the Copan. There, you can enjoy everything from drinks and snacks at establishments like Bar da Dona Onça and Cuia to contemporary art at the Pivô gallery.
The guide also highlights cultural venues such as the new Espaço República and the Mário de Andrade Library, as well as the culinary hotspots A Casa do Porco and Sorveteria do Centro. Check out all the recommendations here!
