After months of anticipation from users, the São Paulo Metro now accepts Pix! The lines managed by the state-owned company began adopting the instant payment system this October, with a gradual rollout. The new feature aims to provide greater convenience for daily commuters by making it easier to pay without using cash.
The modernization of the system is the main reason for the change. In an increasingly digital world, São Paulo’s rail transit system is following the example of other major cities around the world by allowing passengers to purchase tickets using nothing but their cell phones.

Pix implementation schedule for Metro lines
The São Paulo Metro accepts Pix exclusively at station self-service machines (ATMs), which issue a printed QR code on the spot. The implementation schedule will occur in phases:
- Line 1 (Blue): October 20–22;
- Line 2 (Green): October 23 and 26;
- Line 3—Red: October 27 and 28;
- Line 15-Prata: October 29 and 30.
Thus, by the end of this month, all stations operated by the state-owned company will have the Pix payment option available at ticket machines. It’s worth noting that privatized lines and those operated by CPTM have already offered this payment method since July 2026.
In addition to Pix, other payment options remain available, such as cash and debit cards at ticket machines, mobile apps, or contactless payment at turnstiles using credit/debit cards, cell phones, and smartwatches.

Metro Accepts Pix, but Says Goodbye to the Edmonson Ticket
The introduction of Pix isn’t the only change to the system this October. In fact, the arrival of instant payments coincides with the “retirement” of the Edmonson Ticket, which is leaving São Paulo’s turnstiles after 52 years of service.
The magnetic card that defined generations will be phased out on October 31. According to the São Paulo Metro, the measure is driven by the need to modernize fare collection, reduce the disposal of paper cards, and cut operational costs (such as printing, distribution, and equipment maintenance).
If you still have magnetic tickets at home, don’t worry. It’s expected that, between November 2026 and January 2027, passengers will be able to exchange their remaining Edmonson tickets directly at Metro service counters. But there’s nothing stopping you from keeping the used ones as souvenirs!
