The Calçada do Lorena is an iconic route in the state of São Paulo, built in the late 18th century to facilitate the transport of sugar between the interior and the coast. Its importance, however, was not limited to trade: the road gained prominence for having welcomed an emperor.
Construction on the route began in 1770, under the command of the then-governor-general of the Captaincy of São Paulo, Bernardo José Maria de Lorena. It was the first paved road between the current metropolis and Santos and, at that time, represented one of the most modern roads in the world.
More than 250 years later, the Calçada do Lorena endures as a trail in Caminhos do Mar Park, preserving part of its original paving. In addition to its historical value, the trail also offers a chance to immerse oneself in nature and enjoy breathtaking views of the Serra do Mar mountain range.

Lorena Street and Brazil’s Independence
After its inauguration, the Calçada became a frequent thoroughfare for muleteers, merchants, and their pack mules. Until, in 1822, the stone road received a distinguished visitor: the then Prince Regent Dom Pedro I, who was traveling to São Paulo.
His journey along the Calçada do Lorena preceded Brazil’s Independence, proclaimed on the banks of the Ipiranga Stream. For this reason, walking the stone paths means retracing the steps of the Brazilian nation.
