The Rodovia dos Imigrantes is the main link between São Paulo and the Baixada Santista, serving as a route for those wishing to relax by the sea. But the SP-160 is not just a quick route to the beauties of the coast: its very layout is a spectacle! With tunnels and viaducts that cross the Serra do Mar mountain range, surrounded by the Atlantic Forest, the road has established itself as one of the most beautiful in the world.
On this route, the journey by car or bus becomes an essential part of the experience, offering views of valleys, unspoiled landscapes and the coastal horizon. What’s more, the combination of cutting-edge engineering and nature turns the Rodovia dos Imigrantes into a tourist attraction in itself, making it the ideal setting for those who love the road and beautiful photographs.

The ingenious construction that protected Serra do Mar
The Rodovia dos Imigrantes was created in 1974 to relieve the Via Anchieta, which, after the industrialization of São Paulo, could no longer support the large flow to the Port of Santos. As a result, the São Paulo government began a revolutionary construction project that sought to cross the Serra do Mar with as little impact as possible.
With a length of 58 kilometers, the road connects São Paulo to Praia Grande without opening up large clearings in the forest. Its 44 viaducts and 14 tunnels allow the asphalt to “jump” the valleys, a feature that minimized deforestation and protected the native vegetation as much as possible.
Its first lane opened in 1976, and almost 30 years later, in 2002, Imigrantes received an even higher and more modern second lane. Today, the highway is one of the most ingenious in South America, serving as an international model for construction in environmental protection areas.

Have you ever noticed the beauty of the Rodovia dos Imigrantes?
Driving along the SP-160 is a unique experience. When you cross its viaducts, you feel like you’re floating over the Atlantic Forest! Each curve brings a new scene of dense forests and valleys, as well as a privileged view of the Port of Santos and the São Paulo coastline.
These “natural viewpoints” generate breathtaking photographs, which have earned the road the informal title of one of the most beautiful on the planet. In this way, the Rodovia dos Imigrantes makes a trip down the mountain an unmissable one, where urban development and environmental preservation meet in perfect harmony.
