When hearing about places to travel in the winter, most people in São Paulo immediately think of Campos do Jordão. However, there is a village in the Mantiqueira Mountains that is gaining more and more popularity, both for its mountain scenery and its more affordable prices. We’re talking about Monte Verde, a retreat 165 kilometers from São Paulo that promises cold weather and plenty of charm!
The district of Camanducaia, in Minas Gerais, currently holds the title of “Best Winter Destination.” The recognition came in the first edition of the “O Melhor do Turismo Brasileiro” award, an initiative by Estadão that selected outstanding destinations throughout Brazil.
Today, the village of Monte Verde brings together the best of nature tourism, fine dining, and amenities for couples, making it the ideal choice for a winter getaway from São Paulo.

From an immigrant’s dream to national fame
The history of Monte Verde began in 1938 with the arrival of Latvian immigrants Verner and Emília Grinberg. Fascinated by the cold climate and the mountain scenery, the couple bought land and founded a farm in the region.
Over the years, other Europeans settled there, which influenced the local architecture. As you stroll through the center, the wooden chalets and sloping roofs in Alpine style will make you feel like you’re in a European village!
The climate also reinforces this feeling: at an altitude of 1,600 meters, the district frequently experiences low temperatures. In winter, for example, temperatures usually drop below 10°C!

What to do in Monte Verde?
The variety of attractions makes the district appealing to all types of travelers. If you’re planning your getaway and still don’t know what to do in Monte Verde, break your itinerary down into three main categories:
Nature
For ecotourism lovers, the trails are must-see stops. It’s worth visiting Pedra Redonda and Pico do Selado, which offer panoramic views of the Mantiqueira Mountains. In addition, parks like Oschin and Fazenda Radical guarantee an adrenaline rush with zip lines, ATVs, and horseback riding.

Dining and shopping
Avenida Monte Verde is the village’s main attraction. There, you’ll find Alpine-style shopping malls, such as Shopping Celeiro, perfect for buying handicrafts and Minas Gerais delicacies.
When it comes to cuisine, the district is a paradise! You can sample everything from traditional Minas Gerais fare to European dishes, such as trout, fondues, and cheese boards paired with wines.

Romantic atmosphere
Finally, couples can enjoy inns with fireplaces, hot tubs, and other treats for two. Another tip is to try Alameda Suíça, voted by TripAdvisor as the best restaurant in the world for a romantic dinner.

Family Fun
Those traveling with children can enjoy the iceskating rink, which offers a winter atmosphere even on sunny days. In addition, VillaLeta is a Viking-themed village with Nordic cuisine, a kids’ area, and nature trails.
