If you’ve seen the movie “Eat, Pray, Love”, you’ve already heard about L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele. In the plot, the protagonist Elizabeth Gilbert (Julia Roberts) visits the pizzeria during her trip to Italy, and when she tries it, she says that she is in love and “in a relationship” with her pizza.
Founded in 1870 by Michele Condurro (“Michele” is a male name in Italian, equivalent to Miguel), the place really exists and is one of the most traditional in Naples. That’s why it receives thousands of tourists every year, who line up to try its famous Neapolitan pizza.
But you don’t have to fly all the way to Italy to visit L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele. After all, the century-old house is about to open a branch in São Paulo! Check out all the details of this delicious novelty below.
Get to know Michele’s L’Antica Pizzeria
Michele’s Pizzeria is one of the oldest and most traditional in Naples, Italy. It has been run by five generations of the same family since it was founded 155 years ago. To this day, it serves its traditional, minimalist version of Neapolitan pizza, with just two flavors:
- Margherita: tomato sauce, buffalo mozzarella, basil and extra virgin olive oil;
- Marinara: tomato sauce, oregano, garlic and extra virgin olive oil.
Despite its long tradition in Italy, its international fame came above all with the release of the book “Eat, Pray, Love” in 2006. The plot, which gave rise to the iconic movie, has a scene in the pizzeria where the protagonist describes how the simplicity of the menu makes the pizzas so exceptional.
Since then, L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele has opened branches in cities such as London, New York and Tokyo. And now, finally, it will be making its home in São Paulo too!
The opening is scheduled for 2025
Pizzeria da Michele is coming to Brazil thanks to restaurateur Frederic Renault, who has already brought French restaurants Les Deux Magots and Le Napoleon to São Paulo. The idea is to bring three units of the Italian restaurant to the capital, the first of which will be in Jardins.
It is expected to open in 2025. We still don’t know what the São Paulo menu will be like, but by analyzing the menus of branches around the world, we can expect the house to offer more options than its two traditional flavors. The pizzeria in New York, for example, serves brunch, pasta and drinks to go with it. We can’t wait to try it!
