Have you ever heard of Cama e Café? Located in the Historic Center, the restaurant occupies a restored 19th century mansion and offers São Paulo country cuisine in a cozy, homey atmosphere.
The place is also a cultural center, hosting parties, live shows, circus performances and much more. Learn about its history below and add it to your list of upcoming trips!
Casarão do Cama e Café once hosted the emperor
The 1870 mansion originally belonged to Dutra Rodrigues, President of the Province (then governor) of São Paulo. For this reason, the place hosted several important figures, including Dom Pedro II, who had Dutra Rodrigues as an advisor.
Because of its original importance, in 1984 the building was recognized as a historical heritage site. But that didn’t stop it from falling into oblivion, suffering from degradation and abandonment until the mid-2010s. Everything changed when businessman Luiz Antônio Pereira Santos decided to restore the mansion and turn it into a restaurant with accommodation.
After the renovation, the space returned to its original splendor. Cama e Café currently stands out for its lunch, which offers home-cooked meals surrounded by architectural relics, such as riga pine doors or ipê and pink peroba wood floors.

A point of memory and culture
The menu at Cama e Café alludes to historical figures and landmarks in São Paulo. The “Largo São Francisco”, for example, has chicken fillet Milanese, while the “Marquesa de Santos” offers dried meat escondidinho. You can also try classics such as feijoada, parmegiana and stroganoff.
Another highlight is the cultural presentations at Cama e Café, which include saraus, concerts, theater performances and exhibitions – all with free admission.
Cama e Café is located at Rua Roberto Simonsen, 79, near Pateo do Collegio. Lunch is served from Monday to Friday, from 11:30 to 15:30. How about planning a trip to Solar da Marquesa and including the restaurant in your itinerary?
