Tropeiro beans, cheese bread, “doce de leite”: it’s no secret that Minas Gerais’ cuisine is delicious. And now it’s even easier to taste it here in São Paulo, with the newly opened Belô Café.
After years of success in Belo Horizonte, the “mineiro” coffee shop opened an address in Jardins this month and promises to bring all the delights of the neighboring state to São Paulo. Shall we get to know them?
Check out the delights of Belô Café
For many people, food from Minas Gerais is all about wood-burning stoves and farm food… And although this is an important part of its cuisine, the truth is that Minas Gerais has much more to offer.
The new cafeteria in Jardins comes precisely to break this paradigm, bringing the best of contemporary Minas Gerais cuisine to São Paulo. There, customers can enjoy everything from brunch to dinner, as well as quick snacks and tasty portions during happy hour.
All the sophistication and tradition of Minas Gerais cuisine
In charge of the kitchen at Belô Café is chef Andreza Luísa. Champion of The Taste Brasil 2023, she has worked in sophisticated restaurants in Belo Horizonte such as Glouton, owned by chef Leonardo Paixão, one of the biggest names in haute cuisine in Minas Gerais. As well as in São Paulo, he worked in chef Oscar Boch’s kitchen at the renowned Tanit restaurant.
During the morning and afternoon, the public will be able to try brunch. One of Belô’s favorites, which is now available in São Paulo, is the ‘Uai Sô!’ combo: cheese breads with potted meat, shavings of cottage cheese and cream cheese, accompanied by cornmeal, guava and “doce de leite”.
For the evening, in order to please the experienced palates of the São Paulo public, the chef has prepared a new menu. The proposal is to serve elaborate dishes with a contemporary aesthetic, mixing the tradition of Minas Gerais cuisine with the new trends of the moment.
For starters, the highlights are the cheese bread tile with chicken liver pâté and jiló caponata; or the pork guioza with rapadura and ora-pro-nóbis. As for the main dishes, you can enjoy authentic chicken rice with taioba (photo), or pressed oxtail with creamy cassava.
For dessert, we recommend the cornmeal french toast with dark cream cheese ice cream and guava syrup. Or perhaps the pumpkin jam roll with burnt coconut ice cream.
What about the drink with pork rinds?
To accompany the delicacies, the house has a mixologist, Marcelo Serrano, who has created an elaborate cocktail menu. To do this, he used the main elements of Minas Gerais cuisine as a base, such as dulce de leche, guava, cheeses and even them: pork rinds.
We’re talking about the Jeni Sour (photo), whose base is aged cachaça, Campari, vermouth, jenipapo liqueur and pork rinds flour.
