O Bar Guanabara is a must for those who want to explore São Paulo’s gastronomic roots. Founded in 1910, it is the oldest bar in São Paulo and is now a classic in the central region, being a key figure in the city’s bohemian life.
The establishment has hosted iconic personalities in the past, such as political figures and, legend has it, the father of aviation. Today, Bar Guanabara continues to attract both tourists and locals who want to enjoy a historical and gastronomic experience in São Paulo.
Bar Guanabara has hosted celebrities
Throughout its 115 years, Bar Guanabara has been the stage for meetings between historical personalities. Politicians such as Getúlio Vargas, Jânio Quadros and Adhemar de Barros have been present at the bar, as well as artists Raul Seixas, Geraldo Vandré and Benito Di Paula.
Behind the stories is one of Bar Guanabara’s most charismatic characters: Vavá do Bixiga. A waiter at the bar for over 40 years, he has witnessed the visits of the famous and is always ready to share the local’s stories. According to him, even Santos Dumont has tried Guanabara’s delicacies, having drawn little planes on his napkins.
The menu offers delicacies such as parmegiana, grilled picanha and feijoada, as well as the famous creamed thigh , which is its flagship dish. To accompany the meal, you can order a draft beer, natural juice or the house drinks, with non-alcoholic options.
