Learn about the history of Ópera Restaurant-School
The training restaurant was founded in 2004 as part of “Marco Zero da Gastronomia,” a project by chef Gil Gondim that offers free training courses in the fields of culinary arts and event planning. Since then, Ópera has trained approximately 60 people per semester, offering them real opportunities to enter the job market.
The initiative combines food service with learning. While patrons enjoy coffee, lunch, and snack options, students gain hands-on experience in various areas of the food service industry, such as the kitchen, customer service, and operations.

Ópera Restaurante Escola offers à la carte lunch, coffee , and snacks at fair prices—much more affordable than the São Paulo average. Check it out:
- Set meals and pasta dishes (R$ 35): beef picadinho or chicken stroganoff, both served with sides; gnocchi, fusilli, or polenta with sauce;
- Desserts (R$ 15): pudding, cheesecake, carrot cake, chocolate cake, tiramisu;
- Beverages (R$ 10): fresh juice of the day, tea, coffee, soft drinks.
If you like surprises, you can order the daily special (R$ 35) or the daily soup of the day. Even one of Brazil’s most famous chefs, Olivier Anquier, has tried it and given it his seal of approval!
Currently, Ópera Restaurante Escola is training a class of people with Down syndrome and is preparing to open more than 1,000 spots for courses in October. Since all proceeds from sales go toward funding the classes, having lunch there goes far beyond simply enjoying a delicious meal: it means directly supporting the transformation of lives in the heart of São Paulo!
