Oscar Niemeyer – Brazil’s most famous architect – left several iconic buildings in São Paulo, such as the Copan and the Memorial of Latin America. What few people know, however, is that Niemeyer also designed a house in São Paulo, the only one in the entire capital. And now it’s for sale!
The property is equipped with four simple bedrooms and a suite, a dining room, an office and even a sewing room. In addition to a large garden of over 1000 square meters, designed by Burle Marx, which offers a breath of nature in the heart of the West Zone.
In other words, if you’re thinking of moving, this is your chance to live in a house that looks like a work of art – if you’re willing to shell out a little money, of course.
What’s it like to live in a house designed by Niemeyer?
Despite being known for his great monuments and buildings, Oscar Niemeyer also ventured into residential architecture. The only one of its kind in São Paulo is in Alto dos Pinheiros and belonged to Milton Mitidieri, an engineer who worked with the architect on the construction of Brasilia.
The project dates back to 1960, but construction only took place in 1974. There are 670 m² of built area on a plot of 1800 m², offering a ample space full of nature around the building. According to Niemeyer, his intention was to make a house that was “simple, different and welcoming”.
Like other of his masterpieces, Casa Niemeyer has curves and modernist details, full of winding corridors. The internal walls don’t go all the way to the ceiling and the external walls have cobogós, two features that contribute to greater ventilation and light.
Another difference is the many panes of glass that separate the house from the garden. In an interview with G1, Milton Mitidieri Filho says that this gives the house an “aquarium in the middle of the woods” look, which allows for a greater connection between the two environments.
After all, how much does the house cost?
Casa Niemeyer was the residence of the Mitidieri family for many years, until it became an event space. Today, the engineer’s children and current owners of the property have decided to put it up for sale – either to someone who wants to continue with the business, or to someone who wants to live there.
The good news is that this lucky person could be you! The bad news is that this would require a simple investment of R$25 million. A hefty sum, but one that offers the honor and luxury of living in a true masterpiece by Brazil’s greatest architect.
