Last Monday, July 1st, the state of São Paulo announced that it will only issue the National Identity Card (“Carteira de Identidade Nacional”, CIN) instead of the General Registry (“Registro Geral”, RG). This way, every Brazilian citizen who decides to get a new copy of their identity card will receive the CIN, which only contains the number of the Individual Taxpayer Registry (“Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas”, CPF).
Still confused about the arrival of CIN? Don’t worry. Check out everything we already know about this change below!
What changes with the National Identity Card?
The big difference in the new documentation is the disappearance of the General Register. As a result, Brazilians’ only identification number will be their CPF.
The aim is to prevent fraud. This is because IDs are state IDs, which made it possible for each citizen to have up to 27 different ID numbers. CPFs, on the other hand, are national, which will unify citizens’ records in all public bodies.
In addition, the new IDs have a QR Code to verify their authenticity, making it difficult for them to be falsified or defrauded.
Do I have to get a new National Identity Card?
Yes, but take your time. That’s because the old ID cards will be valid until February 28, 2032. In other words, you don’t have to do the new one now, but you will have to do it in the future.
Where can I get a National Identity Card?
The body responsible for issuing this document in the state of São Paulo is the Poupatempo. Simply log in to the app and schedule the day and time that best suits you.
How much does it cost to get a National Identity Card?
The first copy of the CIN is free!
What documents are needed to issue the CIN?
To apply for the new ID, you will need to present your birth or marriage certificate (original and a simple copy), as well as a CPF document.
