It’s impossible to tell the story of Avanhandava Street without mentioning Walter Mancini. After all, it was in 1980, when the entrepreneur opened his first restaurant, Famiglia Mancini, that everything began to change on this street.
The entrepreneur’s first venture was Trattoria Famiglia Mancini, a space with the feel of a classic cantina, eye-catching decor, and an extensive menu. Today, more than 40 years after its opening, the restaurant is a must-see tourist attraction in São Paulo.
Two decades later, the Mancini Group’s second restaurant opened: IL Ristorante Walter Mancini. Then came Calligraphia Art Gallery, the Madreperola snack bar , Migalhas, and the Gato Bravo Vintage Shop.
Thus, that stretch of Avanhandava has become a hub for gastronomy, music, and art, as well as a sort of Italian street in São Paulo.
Today, it’s not just restaurant patrons who stop on the street. It has become a tourist attraction in the area, and the lights that decorate it catch the eye of anyone passing by.

It sounds like a legend, but believe it. There’s a hidden waterfall on São Paulo’s most beautiful street! Known as the Avanhandava Waterfall, it lies beneath the Frei Caneca Staircase, on the slope between Frei Caneca and Avanhandava streets.
