São Paulo is full of streets that attract the attention of tourists and residents alike. But one of them can be considered the most charming in the whole city. We’re talking about Rua Avanhandava, a crossroads of Rua Martins Fontes, close to the Anhangabaú metro station.
Passers-by feel as if they’re strolling through an Italian village. That’s because the Mancini empire – a group that has eight establishments on the street – has transformed the street into a gastronomic and cultural hub. Shall we get to know it?
Rua Avanhandava: discover São Paulo’s most beautiful street
It’s impossible to tell the story of Rua Avanhandava without mentioning Walter Mancini. After all, it was in 1980, when the businessman opened his first canteen, Famiglia Mancini, that everything began to change on this street.
The entrepreneur’s initial bet was Trattoria Famiglia Mancini, a space with the air of a classic canteen, eye-catching décor and a vast menu. Today, more than 40 years after its opening, the restaurant is an essential tourist attraction in São Paulo.
Two decades later, the Mancini group’s second restaurant was born, IL Ristorante Walter Mancini. And then came the Calligraphia Galeria de Artes, the Madreperola snack bar , Migalhas and the Gato Bravo Vintage Shop.
Thus, that piece of Avanhandava became a hub for gastronomy, music and art, as well as a kind of Italian street in São Paulo.
Today, not only restaurant customers stop by the street. It has become a tourist attraction in the area and the lights that decorate it attract the attention of anyone who passes by.
Therefore, visiting Avanhandava Street is to be sure that the city of São Paulo holds many surprises. This little corner of the city center is worth a visit both at night, when the lights illuminate the space, and during the day.
