The Garça Cherry Blossom Festival is one of the largest Japanese events in central-western São Paulo. In 2026, the event will take place on the July 9 holiday, making it an excellent option for residents of São Paulo who wish to enjoy the blooming of the cherry blossoms away from the hustle and bustle of Greater São Paulo’s festivals.
Now in its 39th edition, the free event features the theme “Roots in Bloom, ” paying homage to Eastern traditions. As is common in the interior of São Paulo state, Garça has strong ties to Japanese culture due to the large number of immigrants who arrived there in the 20th century. It is estimated that, currently, more than 200 local families are of Japanese descent!
That’s why the Cherry Blossom Festival is an opportunity to enjoy a spectacle of nature and , as a bonus, immerse yourself in the details of this fascinating ancient culture. How about taking advantage of the long weekend to check it out?

Learn all about the 2026 Garça Cherry Blossom Festival
The Cherry Blossom Festival— also known by its original name, Sakura Matsuri —is a Japanese celebration honoring the blooming of cherry blossoms. Because they bloom only once a year, cherry blossoms are seen in Japan as a symbol of fleeting beauty, the cycles of life , and renewal.
With the arrival of these immigrants, the Sakura Matsuri came to the small town of Garça, a city of 40,000 inhabitants located 400 kilometers from São Paulo. Today, the event represents the history of the local Japanese community, serving as a guardian of its customs and culture.

To celebrate the Japanese influence in the city, the 2026 Garça Cherry Blossom Festival brings together culinary and cultural attractions. In other words, in addition to the delicate pink blossoms, visitors will be able to enjoy:
- Traditional cuisine: a food court featuring sushi, tempura, yakisoba, and other Asian delicacies, as well as regional specialties;
- Traditional culture: taiko ( Japanese drum) performances and folk dances;
- Music: live rock, pop, and other genres;
- Entertainment: cosplay contests, cultural workshops, and a craft fair.
That’s why the Garça Sakura Matsuri is the perfect way to enjoy an outdoor cultural experience this holiday. Be sure to take advantage of it, because the next opportunity won’t come until next year!
