São Paulo always offers us a wealth of great stories, and few buildings capture the city’s transformations as well as Galeria Metrópole! Located on the charming Avenida São Luís, the shopping complex has been in existence for more than six decades and preserves fascinating stories on every floor.
The Galeria Metrópole project was conceived by renowned architects Gian Carlo Gasperini and Salvador Candia, winners of an architectural competition held to select the building’s design. Constructed between 1959 and 1964, the structure covers an area of 8,000 square meters.
The project was conceived with a bold and sophisticated vision for its time: a high-end vertical shopping center in the heart of the capital.
The Golden Age and the Luxury of Galeria Metrópole

From its very conception, the complex impressed with its size and the variety of attractions brought together in one place.
The developer’s launch brochure promised approximately 20,000 square meters of retail space . In addition to 14 escalators, it would feature commercial offices, bars frequented by students and intellectuals, a nightclub, and even an indoor garden.
Another major highlight of the gallery’s early days was the trendy Cine Metrópole, an imposing movie theater with a capacity of up to 1,000 spectators per screening.
For years, this unique combination of entertainment, services, and fine dining has attracted São Paulo’s elite. Furthermore, it has established Galeria Metrópole as one of the main gathering places in the Historic Center.
From a diverse range of services to a cultural focus
However, as the decades passed and the retail landscape underwent constant changes, the venue began to host other types of businesses, such as vinyl record stores, and to host events like the Metrópole Festival.
In fact, the building’s versatile structure has opened the door to more everyday services, such as travel agencies and repair shops. This has allowed diverse groups of people to frequent the location and maintain a constant flow of traffic through its hallways.
Today, the space still stands out for its impressive architecture and excellent location at 187 São Luís Avenue.
The location continues to capture the attention of those who appreciate São Paulo’s heritage, bringing together offices, dining, and a unique urban atmosphere that celebrates the capital’s historical significance.
