A Fiesta de Muertos is one of São Paulo’s most eagerly awaited cultural events, bringing together thousands of people to celebrate the Mexican festival. The celebration, which seeks to pay homage to those who have passed away, has broken down borders and gained gigantic proportions in the capital of São Paulo, making it the largest celebration of the Day of the Dead outside of Mexico.
Every year, the festival gives São Paulo residents the opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture of the Latin American country. From typical foods of the country to lucha libre performances, the whole event will make you feel like you’re in Mexico City!

Why does São Paulo have the biggest Día de Muertos festival outside of Mexico?
The purpose of Día de Muertos is to honor loved ones who have passed away through folkloric dances, altars and musical performances. Its origins are linked to pre-Columbian indigenous peoples, such as the Aztecs, whose celebrations of the dead ended up being syncretized with the Catholicism brought by the Spanish colonizers.
Today, the celebration is present all over the world. In São Paulo, it always takes place at the Memorial da América Latina, with the support of the Mexican Consulate and the Mexican immigrant community in the capital. This guarantees an authentic festival, with traditional flavors and cultural performances that you don’t find every day in Brazil.
