Who hasn’t waited for Wednesday to come around to satisfy their craving for feijoada? Did you know that each day of the week has its own dish? If you work outside, you don’ t even need to look at the menu to know what the dishes are for each day of the week in São Paulo.
In a city the size of São Paulo, it’s (almost) impossible to go home in the middle of the day for lunch. In this way, the daily meal ends up being a small routine in the midst of the daily chaos of the São Paulo worker.
Dishes for every day of the week in São Paulo
Paulista style
On Mondays, rain or shine, the famous Virado à Paulista is served. A dish that originated during the expeditions of the bandeirantes and is still part of São Paulo’s culture today. And there’s nothing better than starting the week with rice, bean tutu, steak, fried egg, pork rinds and fried plantains, is there?
Steak
Some more traditional restaurants serve it on Tuesdays. However, because it is a dish that is not widely consumed in São Paulo, establishments have started to offer steak à rolê. This is why it has become the most popular option in the city.
Feijoada
Wednesday goes without saying. After all, everyone knows it ‘s feijoada day. The dish famous for its black beans, ribs, sausage and pepperoni, accompanied by thin cabbage and farofa, is this week’s favorite. So much so that Saturday has become the bonus day for feijoada in restaurants that serve PF. Because a day off also calls for a good feijuca.
Pasta
Since Thursday is pasta day, there’s no shortage of noodles. But you can always find gnocchi, lasagna, ravioli and even cannelloni on the trays of the restaurants that serve PF and à kilo food.
Fish
The lightest day of the week, at least as far as São Paulo lunches are concerned, is Friday. Whether it’s because of the country’s Catholic influence – and a possible connection with Good Friday – or just to include this protein on the plate, the fact is that there is this custom of eating fish on Fridays.
