São Paulo’s north side will soon be home to yet another green area: the Campo de Marte Municipal Park. With an area of approximately 400,000 square meters, the public space will host cultural, sporting and educational activities, as well as environmental preservation.
The park, which has yet to be inaugurated, arose from a dispute between the federal government and São Paulo City Hall over the Campo de Marte site. Check out more details below!
Campo de Marte Park: more leisure in the north zone
In May 2024, São Paulo City Hall decreed the creation of the new park in Santana. From now on, the site will undergo a revitalization that will make it ready for the public.
The renovation will include the installation of walking and running trails, a skate park, courts and accessible toilets. As well as a logistical support area for Carnival, which takes place annually at the Anhembi Sambadrome.
In addition, the site will undergo ecological restoration, which will replace exotic species with native ones from the Atlantic Forest, helping to preserve the biome’s environment.
Will the airport end?
Since the 1932 Revolution, the city of São Paulo and the federal government have been at an impasse over Campo de Marte, which covers an area of more than 2 million square meters. After more than 90 years, in 2024 both parties reached an agreement to cede part of the space to the federal government and part to the city.
So no, Campo de Marte Airport is not going to end. It will continue to operate, occupying the 1.7 million square meters that belong to the Brazilian government. The park, on the other hand, will occupy the area belonging to the city hall.
The revitalization will be the responsibility of the Campo de Marte Concessionaire, which will manage the park for 35 years. Although the management will be private, access to the park will be free.
