The Theatro Municipal is one of São Paulo’s most beloved historic buildings and has been a reference in culture since 1911. What many people don’t know, however, is that the building is home to unmissable cultural experiences that go beyond drama. In its basement, just below the stage, is the Bar dos Arcos – one of the most emblematic places in the capital.
The underground stone corridors create a mysterious and intriguing atmosphere, which together with the centuries-old aura of the venue creates a totally unique experience in the center of São Paulo. So, if you like art and history, why not take an evening to visit Bar dos Arcos?

Bar dos Arcos occupies a century-old gallery in São Paulo
The Municipal Theater has been a symbol of São Paulo culture since 1911, with listed architecture inspired by the Paris Opera. During its construction, the basement received huge chambers that served as natural ventilation ducts, helping to cool the room at a time when there was no air conditioning.
In 2016, the space re-emerged as Bar dos Arcos by Facundo Guerra and Cairê Aoas. The underground chamber received a makeover inspired by the movie “The Shining” (Stanley Kubrick) that added even more mystery to the atmosphere, with corridors that look more like labyrinths, illuminated counters and the iconic centuries-old stone arches.
In addition to the iconic setting, the public can enjoy classic or signature drinks, and a menu of snacks and delicacies to enjoy in groups or individually.
