The Ruth Cardoso Orchid Garden is open again! After reopening last weekend, the space regains its title as a peaceful refuge in São Paulo, inviting botany and architecture enthusiasts to take a peaceful stroll in the heart of Villa-Lobos Park.
Right at the entrance, visitors are greeted by an imposing circular structure bathed in soft light. The decor consists of hundreds of orchids of different species, as well as other plants native to Brazilian flora. Best of all, you don’t have to pay anything to admire this sanctuary.

Ruth Cardoso Orchid Garden: history, botany, and unique design
The architectural design of the Ruth Cardoso Orchid Garden bears the signature of Décio Tozzi, who designed the entire Villa-Lobos Park. Its shape is inspired by huts, with transparent spherical walls that blend into the landscape and are ideal for growing orchids, as they allow for natural ventilation and lighting.
The name pays homage to anthropologist and university professor Ruth Cardoso(1930–2008), a researcher of indigenous ethnic groups and a leading figure in Brazil. To honor her career, the internal structure houses informative panels that narrate the most relevant moments of her life.
Over the years, however, the greenhouse suffered severe deterioration: it lost its roof, saw its flora disappear, and fell into disrepair. Fortunately, a ten-year renovation was able to save this São Paulo heritage site. The work cost around R$ 2 million and restored Tozzi’s design, returning the space’s beauty and environmental function.

How to visit?
The Ruth Cardoso Orchid Garden brings together approximately 27 varieties of orchids, including exotic and Brazilian species. In addition, the space is home to more than 50 species of native plants, such as ferns, imperial bromeliads, and the famous brazilwood tree.
Water also plays an important role in this ecosystem. The environment has twowater mirrors that control humidity organically and maintain a mild climate for both plants and visitors. Although necessary for the survival of orchids, the mirrors also serve an ornamental function. After all, the water produces beautiful reflections on the dome, creating the ideal setting for photos!
The Ruth Cardoso Orchid Garden is located in Villa-Lobos Park, at Avenida Professor Fonseca Rodrigues, 2001 (Alto de Pinheiros). It can also be accessed via Avenida Queiroz Filho, near gate 2. The space is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and admission is free.
