If you’re looking for a different destination to enjoy the sea, Praia do Laboratório, in Angra dos Reis (RJ), needs to be on your radar. With waters naturally heated by the Angra 1 and 2 nuclear power plants, this secret beach just 4 hours from São Paulo is a real find for those who want to escape the crowded beaches and reconnect with nature.
Located in a discreet and difficult-to-access region, the beach has no signposts and almost no tourists find the place by chance. The nickname “secret beach” is no coincidence.
After all, the best-known route is via the Rio-Santos highway (BR-101), towards Rio de Janeiro, taking a paved road near the power stations. There are no signs – but there is a good reward: clear sand, native forest and a crystal-clear, warm sea that looks like a large natural jacuzzi.
Warm and safe diving: all about Praia do Laboratório
The water at Praia do Laboratório heats up during the nuclear energy production process: the seawater cools the plant circuits (without direct contact with the radioactive material) and returns to the ocean a few degrees warmer. The result? A warm sea bath all year round, even in winter.
The higher water temperature even attracts sea turtles, which are common in the region and easily spotted by snorkelers. The transparency of the sea and the tranquillity of the place create the ideal setting for relaxing, taking incredible photos and enjoying nature without rushing.
And if you have any doubts about safety, you can rest easy: since 2016, Eletronuclear and the State Environmental Institute have been monitoring the area and have classified the beach as suitable for swimming. In other words, you can enjoy it without fear!
Finally, an important tip: take a snack. Praia do Laboratório has no kiosks or restaurants, and there are only street vendors during the high season. So pack some food, water and a bag to collect your garbage – the idea is to leave this secret paradise even more unspoiled.
