Historic mansions are one of São Paulo’s great charms and symbolize the capital’s past. Despite their importance, many of these buildings are not cared for and end up in a state of abandonment. One example is the Palacete da Praça Roosevelt, a building over 100 years old whose beauty is now hidden behind walls and graffiti.
From elite stronghold to abandoned mansion in Bela Vista
Inaugurated in 1912, the mansion was initially the residence of Silvério Ignarra Sobrinho, an Italian immigrant who pioneered electricity in Brazil. At a time of great development and enrichment in the city, the mansion became a meeting place for São Paulo’s elite.
The property’s fate changed in 1929, when it became home to an annex of the Deutsche Schule, a prestigious German school. With the Second World War, the institution was forced to break ties with Germany, becoming the renowned Colégio Visconde de Porto Seguro.
After the school’s departure, the Palacete on Praça Roosevelt became the property of the São Paulo government, which intended to set up a state school there. However, plans changed and the mansion remained empty and gradually deteriorated. As a result, the building is currently in a critical state: the structure is compromised, there are exposed bricks on the façade and the roof has collapsed, leaving the interior vulnerable to the weather.

Is there hope for the Palacete da Praça Roosevelt?
Although the mansion was listed as a São Paulo historical heritage site in 2022, its situation is still complicated. Fortunately, recent mobilizations could give the Palacete da Praça Roosevelt a new chance and restore its value to the community.
The São Paulo Antiga Institute, together with state deputy Ediane Maria (PSOL), residents and collectives from the region, is leading a movement in defense of the palace’s preservation. The aim is to revitalize the building and turn it into a useful space for the population, such as a museum, nursery or cultural center.
