After a successful run in Rio de Janeiro, the production “My Son Is a Musical” finally arrives in São Paulo! The play pays tribute to the career of actor and comedian Paulo Gustavo, from his childhood to his rise to fame in Brazilian entertainment.
The show will continue running at the Renault Theater through October, with performances Thursday through Sunday. Tickets start at R$ 25 and are available at the theater box office or on the official website, subject to a convenience fee.
“My Son Is a Musical”: An original production in honor of the comedian
The project is an initiative by Renata Borges and Déa Lúcia, the artist’s mother. The script was written by Fil Braz, the actor’s longtime collaborator, with dramaturgical contributions from researcher and anthropologist Beatriz Coelho. The production is directed by Ju Amaral and João Fonseca, who also directed the artist in “My Mom Is a Play” and the series “Vai Que Cola.”
On stage, João Pedro Chaseliov and Pierre Baitelli take turns playing the lead role of Paulo Gustavo. The cast also features Stella Maria Rodrigues as Déa Lúcia and Marcelo Várzea as Júlio, the comedian’s father, as well as portraying figures such as Thales Bretas, Fábio Porchat, and Marcus Majella.
The original songs were composed by Daniel Salve, with musical direction by Tony Lucchesi and choreography by Alonso Barros. Rounding out the creative team are Nello Marrese on set design, Theodoro Cochrane on costumes, and Daniela Sanchez on lighting design.
Play Fulfills Paulo Gustavo’s Long-Held Dream
The play delves into the life and work of Paulo Gustavo. A native of Niterói (RJ), the comedian was born in 1978 and became one of the biggest names in Brazilian entertainment. His film “Minha Mãe é Uma Peça 3,” for example, set a box office record in 2019. The film grossed over R$137 million within just one month of its release and remains, to this day, the highest-grossing film in the history of Brazilian cinema.
For Déa Lúcia, the production fulfills a wish that her son himself expressed while he was alive. “My son had a rare talent and a rare heart. Everything he did, he did with great love and dedication. Now, Juju [Ju Amaral, the actor’s sister] and I are going to pay him every tribute and make one of his biggest dreams come true: a grand show,” she says.
The show runs for 180 minutes (including an intermission) and is rated for ages 12 and up.
