The journey between the north of Greater São Paulo and ABC Paulista will soon get longer. That’s because Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos (CPTM) has announced the end of Service 710, which provided a direct connection between Rio Grande da Serra and Jundiaí. Therefore, to make the journey, it will be necessary to change trains.
Service 710 was inaugurated in May 2021 and aimed to facilitate access between the two extremes of Greater São Paulo. It ran without interruption for four years, during which time it benefited more than 160,000 people a day.
In other words, the closure of the service will have a significant impact on the lives of many São Paulo residents. Understand the reasons and consequences of the change below.
Why is the 710 Service coming to an end?
The aim of the 710 Service was to integrate lines 7-Rubi and 10-Turquesa, both of which had been run by CPTM until then. In 2024, however, an auction by the state government awarded the management of the 7-Rubi to the private sector, which will change the logistics of running the line.
This is because the change is not just administrative. With different managements, the two lines will have different operating systems, signaling and even trains, which prevents integration between them.
Service 710 is expected to be discontinued in September 2025, the month in which Consórcio C2 will take over management of Line 7-Rubi. The group will also be responsible for the São Paulo-Campinas train project, with construction due to start in May 2026.
How will the change affect the population?
At the time of its inauguration, Service 710 was described as an important device for optimizing the passenger experience. In this evaluation article from May 2021, for example, it is stated that “the time savings for the operation, with the reduction in maneuvering and return times, and the time savings for the passenger, who will no longer have to make unnecessary transfers, are formidable.”
In addition, two months into operation, CPTM reported that the service was benefiting 165,000 people a day, or almost 30% of the passengers on Lines 7-Rubi and 10-Turquesa. Meanwhile, passengers testified that the service helped their routine, as it reduced the number of transfers, the time spent on public transport and made the trains less busy.
Thus, the closure of its operations will have an impact on the daily lives of passengers, especially those who frequent the northern region of Greater São Paulo and the Greater ABC region. After all, without integration, it will be necessary to change at Luz Station to continue the journey, which could increase travel time and the flow of passengers during rush hour.
