The Zu Lai Temple stands in stark contrast to the fast-paced routine of Greater São Paulo. Just drive a few kilometers along Raposo Tavares to leave the concrete behind and find curved roofs, red lanterns, golden details, and a silence that seems to suspend time. It feels like you are passing through a portal, but you are still less than an hour from the capital.
Located in Cotia, Zu Lai Temple is the largest Buddhist temple in Latin America. The complex occupies approximately 10,000 square meters of built area within a plot of land that exceeds 150,000 square meters.
Zu Lai Temple, in Cotia: oriental architecture and gardens that look like paintings
Opened in 2003, the temple is part of the international Fo Guang Shan order, which originated in Taiwan and is linked to Mahayana Buddhism. But the visit goes far beyond the religious aspect.
The space also functions as a cultural and educational center, spreading the principles of Humanistic Buddhism. This branch applies the teachings of Buddha to everyday life, with a focus on ethics, compassion, and social responsibility.
Right at the entrance, traditional architecture inspired by the great oriental temples dominates the scene. Curved roofs, vibrant colors, and symbolic elements create an atmosphere that naturally invites introspection.

The gardens are an essential part of the experience. Well-maintained paths lead through woods, bamboo groves, and ornamental lakes with carp. Inside the complex, there are meditation rooms, lecture halls, and exhibition spaces that explain Buddhist tradition.
The highlight is the main hall, where an imposing statue of Buddha reinforces the feeling of serenity. Even on weekends, when there is usually more activity, the atmosphere of silence and contemplation remains intact.

How to visit
Admission is free. The temple is open Tuesday through Friday in the afternoon, as well as Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays with extended hours.
Access is via the Raposo Tavares Highway, at km 28, in Cotia. As this is a religious space, appropriate clothing and respect for the areas of silence are recommended. In addition, it is not permitted to consume food brought from outside in the internal areas.
Finally, for those who wish to prolong the experience, Zu Lai Temple also offers cultural activities, ceremonies, and meditation sessions on specific dates. In other words, you can turn a simple day trip into a real break from the São Paulo routine.
