Why is winter in SP colder in 2025?
Unlike previous years, when El Niño warmed the waters of the Pacific Ocean and brought heat to the continent, 2025 began with a neutral Pacific. In other words, there were no phenomena influencing the climate, which opened up space for the Antarctic winds to reach South America – and lower temperatures.
As a result, we are receiving several polar air masses, which are bringing this intense cold to São Paulo! In addition, according to meteorologists, global climate change is causing temperatures to become increasingly extreme – both for the cold and the heat.
Is it true that a historic cold front will cause snow in São Paulo?
With so much cold in São Paulo, it didn’t take long for fake news to appear. An image circulating on the internet claims that Climatempo has announced an unprecedented cold wave, one of the most intense in history.
According to the publication, a phenomenon called “polar amplification” would cause negative temperatures in several regions of the country, reaching -1o°C. In addition, several capitals would suffer from frost and even snow, including São Paulo.
However, meteorologist Cesar Soares said in an interview with G1 that the forecast of this historic cold front is false. New polar masses are expected to hit São Paulo at the end of July, but they won’t be intense enough to cause such a critical scenario.
