A cold front arrived with everything in São Paulo The cold front hit São Paulo with very low temperatures that took people by surprise. The thermometers dropped so much that some of São Paulo’s cities got colder than Siberia, can you believe it? Of course, the Northern Hemisphere is in summer right now, which makes the comparison a little more, shall we say… unfair.
Even so, Siberian summer temperatures are around 15°C, while the average São Paulo winter is between 14°C and 23°C. So it would come as no surprise if the São Paulo winter was warmer than the Russian summer, so the São Paulo “victory” is still somewhat of an achievement.
As a result, São Paulo residents have the pleasure of saying that, for at least one day, our thermometers were lower than in one of the coldest regions on the planet. There were even negative temperatures here, by the way. Somewhere much closer than São Paulo residents realize…
Paulistas experienced sub-zero temperatures this week
One of the coldest cities in Brazil is Campos do Jordão whose high altitude makes winter more rigid there than in other regions. And no wonder – early risers in “Brazilian Switzerland” had to bundle up a lot last Wednesday (25), when the city hit 1.3°C at dawn.
But Campos was not the coldest city in the state. On the same morning, the capital of São Paulo dawned with an average of 5°C, but certain areas of the city were even colder. This was the case in the South Zone, where the large presence of nature helped bring the thermometers down to an impressive -0.7°C.
The big record, however, went to a town in the interior of São Paulo. The small town of Corumbataí, 214 kilometers from São Paulo, dawned with a temperature of -2.4°C. Blankets galore!
Why are cities colder lately?
Perhaps this question sounds silly. It’s cold because it’s winter! But it’s not like that. Although we do get a bit chilly at this time of year, there is another one-off phenomenon that contributes to the thermometers being (even) lower than normal.
Last Monday, the 23rd, a mass of polar air arrived in Brazil, which had an abrupt effect on the weather. According to Climatempo, the phenomenon was strong and caused a “sharp drop in temperature” in several states, especially in the south, São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul.
This cold wave is expected to last until Friday the 27th. The very next day, however, another mass of polar air will advance across southern Brazil. Will it reach São Paulo? Until the thermometers tell us, it’s best to prepare the blankets and some warm tea.
