How about taking the weekend to see dinosaur fossils and learn about one of the largest meteorites in Brazil? A good place to have these experiences is USP’s Geosciences Museum, which has just reopened its doors in Cidade Universitária. After more than a year of renovation, the space is back even more complete and interactive, with fun and educational attractions for all ages.
The museum has a collection that covers everything from the origin of the Earth to prehistoric animals, as well as rare and precious stones. Visiting the museum means exploring the world of science in an accessible way, through a richly preserved collection.
USP’s Geosciences Museum has news for you!
In September 2023, the USP Geosciences Museum suspended visits due to an extensive restoration of its infrastructure. But as well as improvements to the space, the 17 months of renovation have also brought changes to the organization of the collection. The exhibitions are now more accessible, with a more didactic language for visitors who are not part of the academic or scientific community.
During the visit, the public walks along an exhibition route that tells the story of the Earth, from the origin of the Universe to the remote times of prehistory. At this point, for example, you meet fossils of iconic dinosaurs and real meteorites, which have survived a tireless journey through space. And then the journey takes us to current issues, where we learn about how human beings have been causing profound changes to our planet.
The great thing about the visit is right at the entrance: a huge replica of a dinosaur skeleton, right in the museum garden! You can also dig for real fossils, see an exhibition of rare and colored diamonds and see the Itapuranga Meteorite, weighing 624 kilos, one of the largest ever found in Brazil.
The collection has been completely redesigned to ensure more interactivity for the public, who can touch pieces, analyze the works and become completely immersed in the exhibition. An experience you can’t miss!
How to visit?
The USP Geosciences Museum is located in the University City, more precisely at 562 Rua do Lago (Butantã). You can visit it from Monday to Friday, from 9am to 6pm. Admission is free, but if you want to visit with groups of more than 15 people, you need to book in advance using this link.
If you want to make your visit even richer, just look for the mediators present in the museum, who will guide you on your way. Unless you’re in a larger group, in which case you’ll also need to book in advance. Keep up to date with news and ask questions on the website or social media.
