The exhibition “Para Falar de Amor, “ which took over the former Ipiranga Novitiate in 2024, is back for a new edition in São Paulo. Focused on being a living laboratory of creation, the exhibition brings together installations by 53 artists at the Cotonifício Building, in Largo do Paissandu. It’s a unique opportunity to visit a century-old building that, until recently, was closed to the public!
The occupation is an independent initiative by Kura Urbana, a project by artist Kauê Fuoco that transforms and revitalizes abandoned properties in the downtown area. Shall we check it out?
From luxury to abandonment: the history of the Cotonifício Building
Opened in 1916, the historic building initially housed the offices of Cotonifício Paulista, a former weaving and dyeing factory. Later, the site became home to the iconic Municipal Hotel, which became synonymous with luxury and sophistication starting in the 1940s.
The deterioration of the downtown area, however, led the once-elegant hotel to close its doors in 2010. From then on, the Cotonifício Building went through a long period of neglect and abandonment, remaining inaccessible to the public for 16 years.

“Para Falar de Amor” gives the imposing Cotonifício a new lease on life
Now, the building has gained a new chapter of art, culture, and entertainment by becoming the headquarters of the Kura Urbana project. The space underwent a renovation that highlighted its century-old architecture to host the exhibition.
“Para Falar de Amor” occupies the building’s four floors with works created specifically for the site. Upon entering the doors of the former hotel, visitors encounter paintings and installations that explore affection, mourning , and the city’s memory, engaging directly with the beauty and ruin of the building itself.
But keep in mind that the exhibition is only open until June 14. It’s worth rushing to secure your visit and support the independent cultural scene in Essepê!
