Soon, the city of São Paulo could be home to the tallest building in the world. Or so says Pablo Marçal, one of the city’s current mayoral candidates. Known for his controversial proposals, the influencer and entrepreneur says he wants to build a skyscraper 1 kilometer high in SP, which would become a “prominent symbol” in the capital.
To give you an idea, the tallest building in the city today is the Edificio Platina 220, in Tatuapé, with a height of 172 meters. In other words, if it comes to fruition, the new building will be almost six times taller than the largest skyscraper we currently have.
The proposal first emerged in April, during an interview with Marçal on the Ironcast podcast, and was confirmed to the Gazeta SP newsroom in July. According to the pre-candidate, regardless of whether he is elected mayor in 2024, the idea remains firm.
Tallest building in the world and other proposals for São Paulo
This is not the pre-candidate’s first bold proposal in these elections. As well as the world’s tallest building, he has also promised to build a network of cable cars on the outskirts of São Paulo, which he says would contribute to urban mobility and job creation in the capital.
In an interview with Gazeta SP, Marçal said that “prominent nations build symbols that mark a new era”, which is why the São Paulo capital would receive the largest skyscraper on the planet. It would be no less than 1 kilometer high – the equivalent of the approximate distance between Praça da Sé and the Mercado Municipal Paulistano.
Currently, the tallest building in the world is the Burj Khalifa, in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. At 828 meters, the skyscraper has 163 floors and 49 elevators.
