With the municipal elections approaching, the season of debates between candidates for mayor of São Paulo is beginning. So far, we have five debates confirmed between now and the first round on October 6th. It will be an opportunity for São Paulo residents to get to know each politician’s proposals better, and then choose the one that best fits their perspectives for the city.
The first debate will take place on Thursday, August 8, on Band. Ricardo Nunes (MDB), Guilherme Boulos (PSOL), Pablo Marçal (PRTB), Tabata Amaral (PSB) and José Luiz Datena (PSDB), who have the highest public voting intentions, are confirmed. The broadcast will take place on BandNews TV (free-to-air television) at 10:30 p.m., as well as on Bandeirantes and BandNews FM radio stations, on the website Band.com.br or by YouTube.

Calendar of candidate debates for mayor of São Paulo
In addition to the first mayoral debate on Band, we have four more confirmed until the first round. They are:
- TV Cultura: 15/09 (Sunday), time to be determined
- UOL and Rede TV! 17 /09 (Tuesday), at 09h30
- Folha de S.Paulo and UOL: 30/09, Monday, at 10am
- TV Globo: 03/10 (Thursday), time to be determined
What are your expectations for the first debate?
Considering that São Paulo is the largest city in Brazil – and one of the most influential – we can already expect fierce discussions in the mayoral debates.
According to Band, although political polarization is a very topical issue in most Brazilian elections, it will not be the main topic this Thursday. Instead, candidates will have to argue about local, everyday issues in the city of São Paulo.
