This weekend, the historic village of Paranapiacaba will host the Film Festival in celebration of independent cinema at Cine Lyra, one of the oldest movie theaters in the “ ” region of Brazil.
With free admission, the three-day event will screen Brazilian short films, as well as host debates, nature trails, and a program of guided tours.
Created by Miriã Santos, Leandro Munhoz, and Lucca Nardone, the festival aims to spark discussions about cinema, the environment, and the importance of preserving historical heritage.
The festival aims to attract a diverse audience, with children’s screenings, activities for audiovisual professionals, awards ceremonies, and attractions for those interested in cultural tourism. Last year’s edition drew approximately 3,000 visitors over two weeks.
What to Expect from the Paranapiacaba Film Festival

This year, the program will feature more than 10 themed sessions, geared toward different audiences such as children, youth, and adults. The curated programs address themes such as diversity, memory, territory, the environment, and the future.
The festival will screen 63 short films, selected from among more than 750 submissions from various cities across Brazil. These films will also compete for the Cambuci Trophy, which is divided into 15 categories.
The lineup is diverse and includes fiction shorts, animated films, children’s films, and documentaries.
In addition, the festival also provides a space for discussions with the creators of the selected short films. These sessions are geared toward film enthusiasts and people interested in entering the audiovisual industry.
The event also organizes nature trails and guided tours through the village of Paranapiacaba, exploring the area’s railroad heritage and local historical sites. Meanwhile, there will be a vinyl record fair and social spaces, with tickets for the tours available at the Lounge.

This year’s edition of the festival will take place from June 19 to 21, from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Screenings will be held throughout the day in blocks, so there will be breaks for the other activities on the program.
In general, tickets can be picked up directly at the Cine Lyra box office 30 minutes before the start of the screening. By the way, if you can, please bring a can of powdered milk as a voluntary donation to the campaign that helps vulnerable families.
