An ambitious urban mobility project is set to drastically change the way São Paulo residents get around the capital. Line 16-Violet promises to connect Oscar Freire, in the noble region of the West Zone, to Cidade Tiradentes, in the far east, in just 30 minutes – something that would be impossible today, with such chaos in São Paulo’s traffic.
The new branch is part of the SP metro‘s expansion plan, and when it is completed, it could benefit more than 225 million passengers a year. With construction scheduled to begin in 2026, Line 16-Violet is already an opportunity to connect two distant neighborhoods, bringing people and opportunities closer together.

What will Line 16-Violet be like?
Expected to be 32 kilometers long and with 25 stations, Line 16-Violet will be one of the largest expansions ever carried out on the São Paulo metro. Connecting Oscar Freire to Cidade Tiradentes, the stretch will allow people to cross the city in just half an hour, with integration with other lines and terminals.
The project is now in the feasibility study phase, led by the company Acciona, which is also responsible for Line 6-Orange. The concession should be granted in 2026, and the inauguration is scheduled for 2040.

Park Line
Although it’s still on paper, the 16-Violet Line has already earned the nickname “Park Line”. This is because many stations will be close to São Paulo’s main green areas, such as Ibirapuera Park, Água Branca, Aclimação and Ceret. The aim is to make it easier for São Paulo residents to access sustainable, democratic and accessible leisure spaces.
The line will be built in two phases. The first will connect Oscar Freire to Abel Ferreira, with 16 stations. The second will complete the route from Abel Ferreira to Cidade Tiradentes, with the remaining nine stations.
