Every year, June 25 is set aside to commemorate Immigrant Day, a date that has a very special meaning for São Paulo. After all, what would Brazil’s most cosmopolitan city be without the different peoples who have contributed to its construction over the last few centuries?
Such importance made the state feel the need to have a space to tell, retell and understand the immigration process that formed the São Paulo we know today. That’s how the Immigration Museum opened in 1993 !
This year, to celebrate its 31st anniversary, the space will have a special program. This is because on the 25th admission will be free, and the public will be able to take part in an online chat with the MI team. Check it out:
Celebrate 31 years of the Immigration Museum!
Generally, tickets for the MI cost from R$8. However, as we’ve already mentioned, on Tuesday the 25th you’ll be able to check out the entire collection for free.
Three exhibitions are currently available. Firstly, ‘Migrating: experiences, memories and identities’, a long-term study that looks back at the history of migratory phenomena and how they are a permanent part of human history.
Next we have move! Climate and displacement’ which analyzes climate change and its influence on displacement around the world; and ‘Transnational Belongings: dances and rhythms from West Africa’, which discusses mobility and belonging based on the music of this African region.
In addition, on the 25th at 11am there will be a virtual chat with the Immigration Museum team, who will tell the public about the history of the museum, the challenges it faces and the achievements it has already made. Participation is free of charge at this link.
