The Boa Vista de Bananal Farm, in the Paraíba Valley, is one of those destinations that combine leisure and history in the interior of São Paulo. With over 270 years of history, the site was once among the wealthiest properties in Brazil and , today, has reinvented itself as a center for conservation and lodging 300 kilometersfrom the state capital.
Today, the property operates as a historicfarm hotel, offering both overnight stays and guided tours. Moreover, if the mansion looks familiar to you, it’s not just your imagination: its well-preserved architecture frequently serves as a setting for period productions, such as the soap opera Sinhá Moça (2006) and the film O Prisioneiro da Liberdade ( 2019).

Learn about the history of Fazenda Boa Vista
Settlement of these lands began as early as the first half of the 18th century, along a route used to transport gold from the Midwest to Rio de Janeiro. The main mansion, however, was not built until 1780, during the early days of Bananal’s settlement.
In its heyday, Fazenda Boa Vista held a prominent place in the empire’s economy and politics. In 1842, for example, it hosted the Duke of Caxias, the chief military commander of Dom Pedro II. In the following decade, in 1854, it became the country’s largest coffee producer.
Like other properties from Colonial and Imperial Brazil, this prestige resulted from the exploitation of enslaved labor. It is estimated that the site housed between 800 and 1,000 enslaved people at the height of coffee production, which maintained more than 1 million coffee trees.
