Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly present in our lives, serving as a tool for everything from work to leisure – who has joined the Studio Ghibli-style photo trend ? But while the use of AI has become routine, it can still surprise us. What would you think, for example, if we told you that your favorite song might actually be by an AI band?
If the supposition shocks you, know that this may already be a reality for many people in São Paulo. After all, the São Paulo capital leads the ranking of listeners to the band The Velvet Sundown, created with artificial intelligence. There are thousands of listeners here, and many may not be aware that this is an artificial creation. But we can also ask ourselves the opposite: does the fact that it’s AI make the band more attractive to some?
AI band: The Velvet Sundown is a hit in São Paulo
The musical group began to resonate in June, attracting media attention for its rapid rise on the platforms. Their first release was just over a month ago, but the AI band already has over 1 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
Of these, more than 15,000 are in São Paulo, the city with the highest number of Velvet Sundown fans in the world. They are followed by Sydney and Melbourne (Australia), Stockholm (Sweden) and London (England).
Group claims to be “neither human nor machine”
In its Spotify biography, The Velvet Sundown claims to be a “synthetic music project guided by human creative direction”, put into practice with the support of artificial intelligence. Thus, all the musicians, lyrics, voices and songs came about through AI tools, with the guidance of a human being. The identity of the creator, however, remains unknown.
The AI band has already released two albums on Spotify: “Floating on Echoes” and “Dust and Silence”. Their most-listened-to song, “Dust on the Wind”, already has over 1.2 million views.
On their Instagram account, the group claims to be “saving modern rock”. You can check out the curious work of Velvet Sundown, who have been breaking the barriers of creativity and artificial intelligence, on Spotify:
