But, after all, what are stromatolites?
These structures were formed by the activity of microorganisms—primarily cyanobacteria—that lived in shallow marine environments billions of years ago. Depending on how the stone is cut, the stromatolites may appear as circular patterns, ripples, or bands, easily going unnoticed by those who are just passing through.
Billions-of-years-old fossils are embedded in the mall’s stones
The markings are present in some of the rocks used in the floor tiles and correspond to what are known as stromatolites. The material found in the marble at Eldorado Mall is between 2.1 and 2.4 billion years old —long before the emergence of dinosaurs and even before the appearance of the first complex life forms.

The next time you’re at Eldorado Mall, it might be worth looking down before heading to the next store. Amid the hurried footsteps and the bustle of the mall, there’s a story spanning billions of years hidden in plain sight.
