Do you know what the “blue economy” is? This increasingly relevant term refers to the sustainable exploitation of marine resources, taking into account the preservation of the ocean environment. Despite not being on the coast, the capital of São Paulo is also “riding this wave” by hosting SP Ocean Week, a festival that celebrates ocean culture.
The event will take place between the 18th and 22nd, from Wednesday to Sunday, at the Memorial da América Latina. The program is free and will feature more than 20 activities, including an exhibition of boat models, a concert by Lenine, a cinema session and even container diving.
Ocean Week is expected to bring together around 15,000 people this year, and one of them could be you. Curious? Find out more about the attractions below:
SP Ocean Week will have a 30,000 liter diving tank
This will be the 5th edition of Ocean Week São Paulo, which aims to defend and celebrate ocean culture. As such, it will feature speakers, NGOs and personalities working in marine preservation, as well as free activities for the whole family.
The big novelty this year is the “Baptism of Diving”. In this attraction, participants will be able to dive into a 30,000-liter container. It’s an opportunity to experience the activity in a controlled environment, with the proper equipment and the individual supervision of a professional
Festival will also feature lectures and boat exhibitions
For those wishing to delve deeper into the subject, the festival will feature a series of lectures, interviews and discussions. These include the “People of the Sea” interview panel, which will bring together personalities such as navigator Amyr Klink, surfer Rico de Souza and musician Evaldo Pereira, who comes from a caiçara community on the São Paulo coast.
In addition, the public will be able to see shows by two artists linked to the fight for the environment: Lenine and the duo Benziê, featuring the couple Vic Conegero and Du Pessoa.
Finally, the Barcos do Brasil exhibition features models of Brazilian vessels. The collection includes miniature boats from Brazil’s coastal populations; the jangadeiros, caiçaras and açoreanos, for example, highlighting the richness and diversity of traditional knowledge.
